Antonio Damasio Probes The Mind In His New Book
The brain, mind, consciousness and self, independently and in romantic relationships to one another, are the focus of Antonio Damasio’s lifelong research and his latest reserve Self Comes to Mind: Constructing the Conscious Brain (Pantheon). Damasio, David Dornsife Professor of Neuroscience and director of the USC Brain and Creativity Institute housed in USC College, dedicated to the publication to dealing with two questions: How exactly does the brain build a brain? And, so how exactly does the mind make that brain mindful?
Damasio believes there must be a reason to create a book. Furthermore to presenting enough new materials on the neurology of consciousness, his reason behind writing Self Involves Mind was to start over. A prolific author of scientific articles and books, including his international best-seller Descartes Error: Emotion, Reason, and the MIND (Penguin Books), as well as an oft-quoted distinguished neuroscientist, Damasio grew dissatisfied with his account of consciousness. Understanding wealthy and complex neurological systems requires deconstruction which is what Damasio will as he studies the processes that lead to consciousness.
According to Damasio, the mind uses specific mechanisms to create consciousness, which is made of self and brain. The mind is the basic component and self is derived from your brain where consciousness emerges. He starts Self Involves Mind as an airplane passenger en route to Los Angeles when he wakes up as the airplane is finding your way through landing.
Damasio cautions that consciousness does not happen instantly as it may appear, as evidenced by sequences documented on brain scans. For example, if you wake up in a different country several time zones removed, go for regions of your brain will work to enable you to get to full consciousness collectively. You awaken and it require you more than an instantaneous realize that you are not in your bed, he said.

In several hundreds of milliseconds you open your eyes, ingest images that become more and more vibrant to form your photo personal, and get a message of who you are from a higher-level coordination of storage procedures. The brain stem, cerebral cortex, and memory space to act together in the complex mental process that tells us who we are and create the emotions that are in the heart to be conscious, he said.
Through evolutionary processes, the wonder of the mind has combined emotions of emotion with the accrual of knowledge, reasoning, and logic. We have less violence than 300 years ago, even 100 years ago because of this evolution that goes beyond basic emotional responses, he explained. Furthermore to humankind advanced of reasoning, unique memory space and rich language, Damasio retains that what separates us from primates is a sense of autobiography.
Once there was consciousness and we could develop memory, reasoning, and eventually language, humans were able to create something novel in the past background of evolution culture. When humans began to interact with one another, artifacts of culture emerged, such as instruments that include moral systems, justice, economics, religious beliefs, science, technology, and arts that are patterned entirely on the matrix of life regulations, Damasio said.
Released this week in the United States and Britain, Self Comes to Mind is already on several best-seller lists in Europe, and is in its second printing in Spain and France, where it’s been received favorably.
